It's a new year and we've got lots of new programmes and initiatives to support you in your athletics and running, including a number of specific initiatives for the road running community. We also look forward to our first championships of 2018 - our indoor combined events champs for Senior and Under 20 athletes.

There's a host of great fixtures across the sport on the way in 2018 including many county cross country championships this weekend, also with Area indoor championships and their cross country events to follow. Head to www.englandathletics.org/championships to find out more.

This weekend, 6-7 January sees our first national championships of 2018 - the  England Athletics Indoor Combined Events and Race Walking championships. Sunday will also host a series of BMC Indoor races as the action takes place at the EIS in Sheffield.

England Athletics are launching a series of Road Shows for the club road running community. The Road Shows are open to club officers, coaches, leaders and club members and offer an opportunity to find out more about some of the new and existing initiatives that aim to support road running clubs, as well as an opportunity for you to share your ideas with us.

Help us to shape the future of volunteering!  England Athletics has secured funding from Spirit of 2012 to support you to improve the experience of volunteering in athletics and running clubs and groups across England.  We are running a series of innovative and engaging face-to-face training sessions in your area on how to create a positive environment for volunteers

England Athletics' Club Run programme is a free initiative specifically aimed at supporting road running clubs.  Participating clubs receive a free series of practical coaching sessions led by coaches linked to the England Athletics coach development programmes with experience in off track running.  2018 appllciations are now open.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has announced that it has selected Birmingham, England as the host city partner of the XXII Commonwealth Games in 2022.  Birmingham 2022 marks 20 years since Manchester 2002, the last time the Games were held in England.

A new research report released this month, ‘Encouraging disabled people to volunteer in sport’, explores the barriers to volunteering and the drivers that could improve its appeal.  The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) alongside the eight National Disability Sports Organisations* and Sport England commissioned the project to understand more on volunteering in sport, as well as to improve the quality and number of opportunities for disabled people.
