There is a wide range of news this month including a number of different road running related items from international level through to Club Run and Road Running Road Show details for running clubs. We have information on how our staff work to support clubs and important updates about a number of initiatives and situations we would like to make you aware of.

Response to Northern Athletics Response to Northern Athletics "The Way Forward" Consultation

England Athletics has issued a statement regarding the current Northern Athletics consultation with clubs.

Marathon programme underway with event in Forest of Dean Marathon programme underway with event in Forest of Dean

More than 50 athletes and coaches gathered for an event in the Forest of Dean to train and take part in workshop sessions with Bud Baldaro, Andi Drake, Tracy Barlow, Nick Anderson and others. The programme is part of England Athletics’ work to support athletes and coaches and raise the standard of marathon running in England with specific targets set for achievement by 2022.

England Athletics are launching a series of Road Shows for the club road running community. The Road Shows are open to club officers, coaches, leaders and club members and offer an opportunity to find out more about some of the new and existing initiatives that aim to support road running clubs, as well as an opportunity for you to share your ideas with us.

Following a busy autumn of England Championships on the road we are pleased to announce the England teams for the road internationals taking place in the new year.  Selections for the teams were all linked to performances achieved at England Championship events. Congratulations to all of the selected athletes and their coaches.

On the 4th April 2018 the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games will be getting underway on Australia’s Gold Coast.  In October, Team England announced which athletes had been selected to take the 75 allocated places on the athletics squad, and those athletes will now be preparing for what is considered the competition pinnacle for England representative teams. We will be catching up with various members of the squad as they set their sights on next year’s event in Queensland.

Chris Jones headed to the Bedfordshire club to find out more about their activities. He visited Vandyke School where the young athletes and a throws session took place there, and found out this is just one of the venues used by the club.

Athletics club and charity, Fitmums & Friends, is celebrating winning the Coaching Intervention of the Year award at last week’s 2017 UK Coaching Awards. Now in their 20th year, the UK Coaching Awards recognise and reward excellent coaching at all levels across the UK.

Now in their sixth year, the Fields in Trust Awards are organised by The Fields in Trust Charity protects the UK’s vital open spaces, safeguarding them for future generations.  This year the public nominated 360 parks in total from across the UK with over 15,000 votes cast.  The Getting Active (Individual sports and informal activity) is supported by England Athletics and parkrun and was awarded to Telford Town Park Arena.

R.E.D January - Raise awareness and support for mental health by Running R.E.D January - Raise awareness and support for mental health by Running

Mind, the mental health charity is teaming up with R.E.D January to encourage people to Run Every Day throughout January to support their own mental wellbeing, while raising awareness and support for mental health. How far or fast people run, or walk is completely up to them, but by getting active for 31 consecutive days in January they can not only kick-start their own year, but also make a positive difference to the lives of others.

England Athletics' Club Run programme is a free initiative specifically aimed at supporting road running clubs.  Participating clubs receive a free series of practical coaching sessions led by coaches linked to the England Athletics coach development programmes with experience in off track running.  2018 appllciations are now open.

The Sports Club Survey is undertaken by the Alliance in partnership with Sport England that aims to assess the health of sport and recreation clubs across the country.  It features questions on a variety of topics such as membership and volunteer numbers, club finances, the key challenges sports clubs are facing and a clubs’ relationship with its local County Sports Partnership. Ensure your club helps to provide valuable insight!
