It has been a highly eventful few weeks in the sport with plenty of action lying ahead as well. This all means there is a lot to update you on! For a range of news on competition, work with clubs and volunteers, and much more please see below.

Vote Now buttonEngland Athletics has been recognised by the Women's Sport Trust, who have judged our work against eight other national governing bodies (NGBs) for different sports and selected us as one of three finalists for 'NGB of The Year' in their annual #BeAGameChanger Awards. The awards celebrate initiatives that tackle the gap between male and female participation in sport and physical activity.  The final winner comes down to a public vote, which closes shortly, and we would really appreciate your support. The England Athletics Marathon championships were incorporated into the Virgin Money London Marathon held on Sunday 23rd April.  We can now announce the England Athletics Marathon championships results.

England 5k Championships: preview England 5k Championships: preview

With the England 5k Championships taking place this coming Friday evening (28th April) many of the nation’s top endurance athletes will be heading to Kingsley, Cheshire.  The popular Mid-Cheshire 5k Series is hosting this inaugural England 5k Road Championships and a capacity entry with an in depth elite field in the men’s race in particular should make for an exciting evening.

On 100 days until the start of the Championships, the organisers of the IAAF World Championships London 2017 have announced that for the first time ever at a World Championships, coaches of medal-winning athletes will also receive medals.  The medals will be for athletes to hand to their coach or significant advisor in recognition of the unique and valued working relationship between athlete and coach.

Whether you are an athlete looking for a new dimension to your role in the sport, a parent wanting to get more involved or have been inspired by seeing how other people have made a difference to people’s lives coaching has plenty to offer. Having secured funding from Spirit of 2012 to invest in developing and supporting our volunteers, an Innovation Day in Birmingham was arranged to plan the best approach for the development of a Volunteer Co-ordinator, and to discuss the wider challenges of involving volunteers in athletics and running.

Some new competition opportunities have been announced for U18* athletes who compete in the hurdles and throws and are looking to gain selection to the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2017.  We would encourage athletes looking to gain selection to a national team to enter one or more of these competitions.

England Athletics aims to field the best possible Senior team at the Loughborough International on Sunday 21 May. The primary aim of selections for the team will be to contribute to the development of potential Commonwealth Games 2018 athletes via way of exposure to international competition and environment.

Whizbee the Bee and Hero the Hedgehog have been revealed as the official mascots for the World Para Athletics Championships and IAAF World Championships respectively following a nationwide search in partnership with iconic BBC children’s television show Blue Peter.

Tickets for Birmingham’s IAAF World Indoor Championships will go on sale soon and if you register now at www.wicbirmingham2018.com you can buy tickets first. The event will be held from 1 to 4 March 2018.

The closing date is fast approaching for the Sport and Recreation Alliance annual Community Sport and Recreation Awards for 2017.  They have been running this awards programme, which is focused on celebrating the great work going on in sport and recreation at a grassroots level, for over 20 years and entries close on Sunday 30th April.

Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April saw athletes from the top county teams from each of the English Regions joined by National Champions from Ulster and Wales descend on Sportcity, Manchester for the 2017 Sportshall UK Finals.
