Jonnie Peacock on the importance of inclusive athletics opportunities

The Commonwealth Games are one of the most inclusive major sporting events. As the Games are in full flow, we caught up with former Paralympic champion and TNT presenter at the Games, Jonnie Peacock on his highlights so far, the integrated nature of the Games and how important such opportunities are for para sport.

Commonwealth Games 2026, Evening Session, Thursday July 30: Second half full of promise 

As the athletics programme rolls into the last couple of days, Team England’s squad looked to build on a strong start. Keen to lead by example, the team captain secured a fabulous bronze medal, while three Team England athletes moved on to three big finals in the days to come.  

Commonwealth Games 2026, Morning Session, Thursday July 30: History in the making 

The women’s mile featured for the first time ever at the Games. Back when the men’s mile last featured in 1966, women didn’t run further than half a mile and the metric mile – 1500 metres – debuted at the Edinburgh Games in 1970. As a result, the crowd were treated to not just a historic first mile, they also witness two Games’ records as the second heat was faster than the opening one.

The Heptathlon came to a dramatic end with Team England’s three athletes fighting it out for the medals all the way to the last stride of the 800 metres. And that was just the start! The crowd was treated to a Games’ record, a world record not to mention plenty of drama all evening.

England Athletics recently took its Race Director Course to Guernsey, giving local organisers the opportunity to access specialist training and support close to home. Delivered on 11 July, the course brought together both experienced and aspiring Race Directors to learn more about the key requirements involved in organising safe, successful and licensed road running and multi-terrain events through RunEvents

The mile made a welcome return to the Games for the first time since 1966. Perhaps the greatest moment in the Games history came when England’s Roger Bannister and Australia’s John Landy went head-to-head in the Miracle Mile in 1954.

The first evening session of the Commonwealth Games featured 11 finals with 14 Team England athletes battling for the medals. And it didn’t take long; the very first final saw England grab gold and bronze to kick off what turned out to be a very memorable evening of athletics.
