Two medals for Great Britain & NI at the World Road Running Championships

Last weekend saw the inaugural World Road Running Championships take to the streets of Riga, Latvia. A strong team were flying the flag for Great Britain and NI across the three distances bringing home two medals.

Whether at small local open meetings or big scale events such as the London Marathon or the World Championships, there are unsung heroes and volunteers working behind the scenes to ensure that races and championships run smoothy and the participants have the best possible experience. We recently caught up with officiating stalwart Bob Brimage from the Wirral who has been an official in the sport for over forty years. Not only that, but Bob was also a runner himself and more recently the Chair of Wallasey AC.

Calli Thackery – the road to Riga

With the World Road Running Championships in Riga fast approaching, we caught up with British hopeful Calli Thackery (club: Hallamshire Harriers), who has had a stellar season so far.  From multiple wins over 5k to a dominant performance in the Big Half, Calli has gone from strength to strength.  We caught up with Calli to learn more about where her running started, her build-up to the World Road Running Championships and the journey she has been on to become the athlete she is today.

Bronze for England team at European U20 road race

Strong running and good depth took England to the bronze medal at the Trofeo Opitergium for the combined team competition in a highly competitive event in Oderzo, Italy. Both races were run in sweltering 27 degree sunshine. The athletes demonstrated great professionalism to cope well with the temperature and maximised use of ice packs and shade to keep themselves cool prior to the start.

The Great North Run has been attracting some of the world’s best road runners for years.  It seemed very fitting, therefore, that Sir Mo Farah chose this venue to be his final competitive race.  But as Farah’s running journey came to an end, for others it was just the beginning.  Thomas Gostelow (James Thie, North Somerset AC) also tackled the 13.1 miles and lined up in the elite field for the first time.  We caught up with Thomas to learn more about his story: how he first got involved in the sport, what it was like to compete in the Great North Run and how it felt to line up next to Sir Mo Farah.

English athletes dominate at The Big Half

English athletes dominated at The Big Half in London on Sunday with wins in both the men’s and women’s elite races and the men’s wheelchair. Calli Thackery, Jack Rowe, and David Weir emerged victorious whilst all six athletes in the men’s and women’s running races achieved the qualfication standard for the half-marathon at the World Road Running Championships in Latvia on 1 October.
