Innovation at England Athletics

We also wish you and your close ones a very happy holiday season, and hope you are able to recharge your batteries ahead of an action packed 2024 athletics and running season across England.

Jean Jackson: An Inspiring Official helping others to follow in her footsteps  

Over the last month at our Regional Awards we have been celebrating the wonderful volunteers that help make athletics and running so special. One of the awards celebrated was the Inspiring Official award which provided an opportunity to thank the licensed officials who are championing excellence across the regions.  At the Yorkshire and Humberside awards we chatted to Jean Jackson, recipient of the Inspiring Official award, about how she got into officiating and the impact she has had on many officials in the region.

Judith Temperton: 1957-2023

It is with great sadness that we pass on the news of the death of Judith Temperton at the weekend. Judith was the NOEAA Competition Manager, and also a much loved and respected Level 4 Endurance official. She gave an enormous amount to the sport and especially to the North of England with the well-being of athletes and athletics as her priority. The heartbeat of Northern Athletics, she was a real stalwart and the go-to person regarding anything athletics. She could always be relied upon and always willing to help - full of common sense with a wicked sense of humour.

Whether at small local open meetings or big scale events such as the London Marathon or the World Championships, there are unsung heroes and volunteers working behind the scenes to ensure that races and championships run smoothy and the participants have the best possible experience. We recently caught up with officiating stalwart Bob Brimage from the Wirral who has been an official in the sport for over forty years. Not only that, but Bob was also a runner himself and more recently the Chair of Wallasey AC.

As we complete our first round of officiating service milestone awards, we spoke to Tim Williams who has been a field official for 10 years and is now a Level 4. It’s quite a family affair with everyone involved with Thanet AC and his two daughters holding officiating qualifications, one already on the National List.

We asked the Clerk of the Course at the England Athletics Age Group Combined Events championship weekend to document their day! Who is the Clerk of the Course? Part of the Technical Team of officials at a competition, the Clerk of the Course helps to ensure that each event site is ready for the athletes and officials at the right time.
