Rob Fox: progressing along the officials' pathway

Officials are the lifeblood of competition in our country and worldwide, and our sport would not be what it is without their incredible commitment and love for athletics and running!

We got the chance to catch up with Rob Fox, a dedicated endurance official with eight years of experience who is an integral part of the athletics community. His passion for the sport extends beyond his role as an official, as he is also a keen distance runner, actively participating in his local parkrun and the Midlands Vets League on the track.

As a a Level 2 Endurance Official, Rob recently completed his Level 2 Track Official qualification during the summer. He enjoys the opportunity to volunteer in both disciplines and is eager to further his development by pursuing a Level 3 qualification next year.

"I feel qualified and experienced enough to be an integral part of a team of officials, either at endurance or track."

Rob's journey through the England Athletics officials’ pathway has been positive and rewarding. The number of opportunities to obtain practical experiences has made achieving his Level 2 qualification a very achievable goal. He was also pleased to be able to access clear and useful material on the England Athletics website which further aided his progression.

However, Rob believes that progression through the pathway can be a very natural step once someone has shown an interest. He encourages new and aspiring officials to start gaining experience and recording them, even if they are still actively competing as an athlete.

"Anything that promotes a more rounded knowledge of the various elements of athletics can only be positive for both that person and the sport."

For Rob, officiating has provided a fulfilling post-retirement semi career. Drawing on his experience as a competitor, club administrator, and masters athlete, he brings a wealth of knowledge to his role.

"I enjoy the sporting competition on view, the responsibility being an official brings, the camaraderie amongst other officials, the regularity of opportunity and the involvement. In three words I would sum up officiating as standards, teamwork and friendship."
