Overcoming adversity to thrive in athletics

For many young children, they can’t wait to step through the gates of their athletics club, meet their friends and get started. However, for Megan Andrews, it was more of a challenge. Megan recently won the Newcomer to Volunteering award at the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Volunteer Awards, and her journey over the last couple of years has been astounding. We caught up with Megan and her mum at the awards ceremony, to learn more about her incredible journey.

Caroline Bird: 1968-2024

England Athletics was sorry to hear that Caroline Bird passed away earlier this month after a long battle with cancer. The English Schools' AA are deeply saddened at the loss of one of their General Committee members. She was also Buckinghamshire AA President. Caroline had been runner up for the England Athletics South East volunteer award for Contribution to Athletics and Running a few months ago.

Celebrating the greats of our sport at our 2024 Hall of Fame

After a break for 2023, the England Athletics Hall of Fame returned in November 2024. The evening at the Athena Events Venue in Leicester was a celebration of our sport with new inductees to the Hall of Fame and recognition of the National Volunteer Award winners for 2024.

National Volunteer Award winners recognised

This year's England Athletics Hall of Fame also recognised the contributions of the volunteers who make the sport happen. Our National Volunteer Award winners were shortlisted from the nine Regional Award winners in 2024. The awards were presented to our National Volunteer Award winners at the impressive Athena building in Leicester as part of the 2024 England Athletics Hall of Fame event.

Volunteer Awards evening 2024: East

The East Region Volunteer Awards returned to the Atheneum in Bury St Edmunds and rounded off a series of recognising and rewarding volunteers up and down England. CEO Chris Jones and Club Support managers Kirsty Fardell and Richard Ayling attended on behalf of England Athletics with regional council chair Matthew Dalton along with members Phil Blundell, Elaine Forrest, Paul Pickard, Tim Cook, Rosslyn Hamlyn and Paul Brooks. They joined club volunteers, coaches, officials and other deserving members of the athletics community in the East of England to come together for an evening of celebration.
