Birthday Honours recognise octogenarian athlete and coach to junior athletes

The 2026 King's Birthday Honours recognised two amazing people at opposite ends of the athletics and running spectrum. James McDonald and Edmund Shillabeer were each recognised with a Medal of the Order of the British Empire (a BEM). James is a long-standing, very successful and well-loved coach at Herne Hill Harriers where he is responsible for the junior endurance athletes. Whereas 86-year-old Edmund has race walked over 25 marathons and raised huge amounts of money.

Success for England Masters at inaugural track 3000m

England athletes were the victors in the first ever Welsh Athletics v England Athletics Masters 3,000m International. The organisers of the Tonypandy Classic hosted this first track international - and what a privilege it was for the masters to be part of such a great event, sponsored by On Running. Athletes of all ages and abilities competed in the stunning setting of the King George V Track in the Welsh town of Tonypandy.

Paul Ross: 1949-2026

England Athletics is sad to hear of the passing of Paul Ross. Paul was a good runner with excellent marathon times and was heavily involved in local clubs and road running in the South West region. He was a member of the first SW Regional Council – representing road running, and championing the South West region at a National level. Paul devoted countless years to our sport, including - along with other visionaries - working to form the Armada Athletics Network.

CEO blog: looking back and moving ahead

Tony Miller: 1946-2026

England Athletics is saddened to learn of the passing of Tony Miller. As well as being a devoted member of Crawley AC, he was a highly respected statistician with NUTS (National Union of Track Statisticians) where he continued to contribute right up to his passing. He was a well-known voice commentating and announcing at events from grassroots up to major internationals.
