England Athletics U17 and U15 Combined Event Championships: Day 1

Only the brave will predict the destination of the four gold medals and national titles on offer in Manchester, but there were more than enough amazing performances to suggest it will take something very special indeed to secure that top slot. Day one is about laying down the foundations in a Combined Events Championships and there were some pretty solid bases constructed. Day two will definitely be something to savour. Here’s why and here’s how day one unfolded:

Issy Boffey - chasing the sub two-minute barrier

This weekend, Issy Boffey (Luke Gunn, Enfield & Haringey/Birmingham Uni) broke two-minutes in the 800m, the ultimate barrier for any female athlete competing over two laps of the track.  We caught up with Issy to get her thoughts on running sub-2 for the very first time:

Turning a competition into an event

A Competition and an Event are different. Each can exist without the other. However, if merged correctly, without compromising the integrity of the competition, sports events can bring both together and be used to inspire the next generation of athletes, volunteers and spectators. We feel the best way to do this is by using our competitions as a hub in the local community, putting on family friendly activities to encourage people into the stadium so they get to see and be inspired by the athletes competing. Athletics, even without the big-name stars is impressive for children to watch, I saw this first-hand last weekend.

England Athletics Senior and Para Open Championships Report – Day 2

Day two was all about applying the finishing touches whether that was for the domestic season as a whole or for anyone advancing from the qualifying rounds of day one. And as ever, at an event of this stature, it was all very much about the head-to-head competition rather than chasing times or performances. And that in turn created a day of exciting competition which included a touch of drama here and there, all the way to the final act – the men’s shot.

England Athletics Senior and Para Open Championships Report - Day 1

The next generation of athletes keen to continue their journey to the top were in Chelmsford to compete for the national titles on offer and put the finishing touches to their seasons. This is an event all about head-to-head competition and getting it right on the day and it was great to see just that all day long. From the very first event early in the morning - the hammer - to the 100m in the afternoon it would take a performance of the highest order to secure gold.

A few of those competing over the two days have a chance of putting themselves in line for selection for next month’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest, with Sunday representing the final deadline for qualifying marks.
