The East Midlands Volunteer Awards took place on in Nottingham. Shortlisted volunteers had been invited to celebrate officials, coaches, club volunteers and other stalwarts of the sport.

It has been a wonderful summer of athletics and running, with some outstanding performances from English athletes on the biggest stage of all – in Paris at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. However, we have also witnessed some fantastic achievements from the emerging young stars in our sport at an international and national level, in events held in the UK and further afield.

It was a great opportunity to celebrate and recognise the hard work, dedication and passion demonstrated by volunteers throughout the West Midlands area. Saturday evening saw England Athletics celebrate the winners of the 2023 National Volunteer Awards. It has been an important feature of England Athletics activity for over a decade and is the the culmination of our volunteer award programme as we recognise our national winners every 12 months after successes have been celebrated at Regional Award evenings.

Pat was too shy to join an athletics club when she was younger, but was encouraged to do so by her schoolteacher and since then has had a lot of success in the sport. We caught up with her to discuss her journey through the sport, especially as a masters athlete and what coaching means to her.
