Celebrating volunteer services to athletics: "Volunteers are the backbone of races, training, competitions and club events."

In 2020, Paul Sanderson, from Telford AC, was the West Midlands Services to Athletics and Running winner at the Regional Volunteer Awards. He went on to receive our national award for his contributions to the sport, and a British Empire Medal in the King's Birthday Honours last week.

Grassroots athletics volunteers receive King's Birthday Honours

As well as the England Athletics Chair Gary Shaughnessy receiving a CBE for his charity work, three English athletics volunteers were also honoured. Malcolm Rogers receives a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to the sport spanning more than 50 years. And there's a British Empire Medal (BEM) for two athletics stalwarts - Bryan Smith and Paul Sanderson.

With team places on offer for the European Athletics U20 Championships in Israel, the European Athletics U23 Championships in Finland, and finally for the U18s, the Youth Games this summer in Trinidad and Tobago, it was no surprise there was a wonderful stream of fantastic performances at this newly refurbished facility in Chelmsford.
