Exciting times ahead for the Youth Advisory Group

February was an exciting month for the Youth Advisory Group, with the first meeting of the year taking place. Last year we appealed for new members to join the group and were so pleased with the response we received, with lots of new people joining this meeting. It was therefore a great opportunity for everyone to get to know one another and learn about what everyone wants to bring to their role in the group.

The group welcomed new members from across the UK, keeping strong connections with neighbouring national governing bodies – Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It is great to have representation from across the UK to really raise the profile of young people in the sport.

The group are focussing on a number of projects this year, with the emphasis of engaging with clubs and young people at the grassroots level of the sport. A number of topics were discussed throughout the day including supporting the transitioning of young adults, as well as furthering opportunities for athletes, officials and coaches with disabilities.

They’re also really keen to get the message out there and are looking at ways to reach out to young people through social media. Members will be writing blogs every fortnight discussing topics that are important to young people and the athletics community further afield.

The AYAG is looking to fulfil two main aims within the next few months by thinking of ways to increase the awareness of the group through promotional material and accessories through the production of flyers and other promotion material. Secondly looking into the potential projects and ways to get actively involved within the Inspiration Programme which is working to maximise the benefits and positive impact that will be produced from the World Championships being held at the Olympic stadium in London this summer.

These are exciting times for the Youth Advisory Group and everyone is looking forward to the year ahead. Chair of the group Marc Ritchie said: "The impact and potential that can be produced from groups such as YAG working together to bring about positive change during the course of the next few years is endless. I’m really excited to be involved and working alongside the members, all of whom are extremely passionate about representing and making a difference for young people in sport.”

Kerry Marland, England Athletics Volunteer Manager added, “England Athletics are committed to providing a platform for young people to contribute to our sport. It’s so inspiring to work with some a passionate group of people. This meeting was a great opportunity for everyone to get together, discuss issues relevant to them and, most importantly, have some fun! We’re looking forward to seeing what the group can continue to achieve over the next year and to have their input into the development of key projects, particularly around the World Championships in the summer."
