The Importance of DBS checks

The Importance of DBS checks

It is a requirement that coaches, officials and volunteers in certain roles in athletics hold a current DBS check through UKA. We explain the importance of these checks and how systems have been put in place to help getting your DBS check done or updated as straight forward as possible.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is a government service. It helps prevent ‘unsuitable’ people from working with children and vulnerable adults. Processing requests for criminal records checks, it helps organisations like athletics / running clubs make safer volunteer recruitment decisions.

UKA takes its responsibilities towards the welfare of young people in Athletics very seriously and requires all coaches and officials that have significant contact with children or vulnerable people to have an Enhanced Disclosure Barring Service Check (DBS), formerly a CRB check. A coaches / official licence is invalidated unless they hold a current DBS through UKA.

The process to apply for a DBS could not be easier! Simply log into your profile at www.englandathletics.org/myprofile, go to the ‘personal details’ section and click ‘access online DBS’.

The online form process is simple to follow, and on-screen information at each stage will help you complete the process effectively. You will need to show three forms of ID to a designated verifier.

More information on who and how to choose your verifier is given in the online process and information on the types of identification required can be found at www.gov.uk/dbs-check-applicant-criminal-record.

Once the application process is complete. Applicants will receive their certificate from DBS. Once UKA have received electronic confirmation of the online application, your license will be produced and sent out to your address. The DBS will be valid for three years from the date of production.
