Olympic gold medallist Thomas Rohler hosts Javelin Masterclass

Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd December saw a very special guest visit Loughborough University for a set of Javelin Masterclass Events.  Rio 2016 Olympic Gold Medallist flew over especially for the event and was able to showcase not only his phenomenal athletic skills, but also his ability to inspire a group of javelin throwers and coaches.

The Masterclasses, now in their fourth year, continue to grow and develop in numbers of athletes and coaches taking part each year.  This year saw the events broken down into two events targeted at U20 and Senior athletes on day one and U15 and U17 athletes on day two.  This allowed the organisers the opportunity to craft two separate days, each targeted specifically towards the athletes’ development stage.   Coaches and parents were also welcomed and allowed the opportunity to the men’s Olympic Champion in action.

David Turner, Loughborough University Javelin Coach said, “This will prove to be a landmark event for British Javelin.  Thomas is not only world class as an athlete, but also as a coach and inspiration to javelin throwers in the UK, young and old.  Thomas was able to deliver everything from engaging presentations to awesome demonstrations of his physical capability and developmentally appropriate sessions for each age group.  Huge tribute must also be paid to the other coaches who helped support the event, Mike McNeill, Dave Hughes, Mark Bradford, Tom Dobbing, Laura Kerr, Bronwin Carter and Scott Knighton and of course Loughborough University for their ongoing support.  We believe now more than ever that British javelin is back on the way up."

Jack Swain, England U23 Championfor  2016 and 2017, and Loughborough Student commented, "To work with someone of Thomas’ ability and status was a huge eye-opener for me.  There is nothing more inspirational than learning from the best and I can’t wait to put the things I’ve learned into practice.  The most important message I took from the weekend was to be creative and have fun!"
