Manchester Athletics booming

Manchester McCain Athletics Network were ever present across Manchester’s biggest sporting weekend - Bupa Mini Junior, Manchester Great Run and Great City Games.  Club volunteers took on various roles:  participants, marshals, officials, volunteers you name it, they did it.

The Manchester City Council and Network team had a busy day promoting all 10 Manchester Athletics Clubs, voluntary positions and coach education courses to the public at the Bupa Mini Junior Run, held at Heaton Park Manchester.

Following the success of the 365 workshop, the Youth sections go from strength to strength. Club successes came in the form of Moston and District Harriers whose young athletes conquered the Mini Junior Course coming away with 4 awards!  Lorenzo Thompson and Sophie Hill claimed Silver in the 13-15years boys and girls races respectively, Ashleigh Davis finished just 3 seconds behind Sophie in 3rd.  Kiaelle Thompson took the club tally to four and grabbed silver in the girls 10-12 years race.  And even more impressive, two of Moston’s 15 year old boys completed the Bupa Great Manchester Run (10k) in 38 minutes!

Further feedback from Clubs with Youth sections indicates there has been a growth in attendance since the successful weekend of Athletics.  Sale Harriers' Graham Marshall said, “Since the weekend we have definitely had more kids come down, clearly the big events get the kids interested”.

Manchester NetworkThe network looks forward to an event-busy Summer to get more involved!
