Bicester AC host end of summer season fun competition to engage more parents

On Tuesday 1st August, Bicester Athletics Club hosted an ‘end of summer season fun competition’ at the club and used it as an opportunity to deliver a volunteer recruitment session to try and engage more parents within the club.

The club used the free Team Personal Best resources available to order online or download from our website at

The event was organised to celebrate all the hard work from parents and athletes throughout the season as well as to promote future volunteering opportunities within the club that the parents could get involved in.

The club used the Team PB sign in sheets to take down all the details of the parents interested in finding out more about the volunteering opportunities available at the club and to establish what kind of roles they might be interested in helping with.  Based on this, they were then put into small groups and designated specific events to work on throughout the evening alongside experienced coaches and officials. This provided parents with the opportunity to have a go a raking, spiking, recording as well as developing an understanding of how certain events work and some of the key skills involved.

Tom Gould, an athlete and coach at the club said, “It was a huge success with a fantastic atmosphere; it was lovely to see our coaches with huge smiles on their faces and making sure everyone had a great time. In total, we had around 50 athletes, 14 regular coaches and officials, and most importantly 12 new volunteers!  The Team PB resources are excellent and looked professional which definitely inspired several of our volunteers to come forward on the night, but also gave us some good ideas on how to run the evening.”

The club found the event a useful opportunity to talk to parents about future volunteering opportunities they could get involved in and has also acknowledged as a club that they need to find more ways to utilise their wealth of 'casual volunteers' and find ways to build confidence in them to secure possible future coaches, officials and committee members for the future.

Do you think your club could benefit from delivering a session to recruit more volunteers? We have some great free resources available to download and order to help you plan, promote and deliver a volunteering recruitment session.

All you need to do is upload your event to the Team PB website which is a fantastic platform to make more people aware of the opportunities you have available. Once you have done this, the resources can be ordered at Please note, we can’t send out the resources until the event has been uploaded onto the website.
