Austria provides development opportunity for athlete and team manager
England Athletics supports the development of athletes, coaches and those wishing to improve on team management roles.
Middle distance athlete James Bowness (Club: Trafford/Glasgow Caledonian Uni, Coach: William Parker) and Sam Ayers (Team manager) had the opportunity to travel to Austria for the 2015 Attnang Spitz Mile recently.
While James ran a PB of 4.13.36, Sam - part of the NCDP (National Coach Development Programme), and who runs and coaches for Keswick AC - learned more about team management and gained valuable experience for the future.
Sam (pictured top with Moroccan elite athlete Said Azouzi) told us, "I got a lot out of it; it was a really good experience to be there in a team management role. Stephan Schranzinger [the Austrian Race organiser] was very helpful and approachable and his input was really valuable."
Stephan (pictured below with James) was able to give Sam information on the background and develpoment of the race an how such a small town receiv.ed sponsorship from a national brand (Spitz).
After his race, James told us, "I gained a lot from this opportunity to race some world class competition with the likes of Jakub Holusa and Andreas Vojta. It's always nice to wear the England kit and this competition provided me with a useful tool to gauge my over-distance fitness. It has set me up well for my summer season over 800m."
England Athletics have been invited back again next year to give the international opportunity to more athletes and coaches.
