National Throws Conference

Loughborough University and UKA Athletics are hosting the European Athletics Association Throws Conference in November 2017.  A world class line up of speakers and activities is planned.  Click here to view more details about this conference

National Level Coach and Athlete Days held regionally

These activities will be targeted at all throws coaches with the aim of brining the throws community, coaches and athletes, together to network and drive performance.  All sessions will involve practical activity.  We will aim to use high quality deliverers with years of experience in athletics and other sports/services and will cascade down information from the British Athletics Futures and Performance programmes.  The national activities will be organised by the Coach and Athlete Development Manager for throws Rob Thickpenny and delivered by the Regional Coach Leads and other leading coaches.

  • Practical activity with athletes to contextualize learning and development.  Clearly mapped content will be detailed in the promotion of the events.
  • Three or four days per year with invited coach and athlete pairs and open to all coaches
  • Places may be limited

Regional Coach Leads

Nick Ridgeon -                 
Nick was a member of the National Coach Development Programme (discus / shot put) for 5 years. He coaches Alan Toward in the discus (59.33) and has been a team coach for England and the GB U/20 team. Nick is currently head of Strength and Conditioning at Northumbria University with a MSc in S&C. Nick also delivers the Movement Skills and Physical Preparation workshops.

South / South East
Rob Earle -           
Rob is a former National Coach Mentor for Hammer and an experienced competitor. He coached Simon Bown to 69m with the senior hammer and is experienced with shot put and discus. Additionally he delivers the Movement Skills and Physical Preparation workshops, plus some courses for UKA. Rob is also a level 5 sports therapist and has treated Olympic medallists. 

Rob Careless -               
Rob was a member of the Throws National Coach Development Programme for 3 years and has coached England international level athletes in the hammer. Rob is based at Derby University and holds an honours degree in Sports Science. He is also experienced with shot put and discus.

South West:
Mo Pearson -     
Mo was a member of the National Coach Development Programme since its inception in 2009 and is a very experienced educator and a former Physical Education teacher. Mo is a level 4 coach in shot put and discus and completed the UK coaching Women in High Performance Coaching Programme.
