England U18s top medal table at International Mountain Running Youth Cup

The World Mountain Running Association International Youth Cup for under 18 athletes took place in Lanzada, Italy. The 4.3km course included a 290m ascent and descent.

Matthew Mackay (Club: Rossendale, Coach: Graham Wright) stormed to victory - leading the England Junior Men to a team gold medal. Mackay took the lead on the climb out of the village on the first lap and was never challenged. His England team mate Euan Brennan (Club: Ilkley Harriers, Coach: Andrew Henderson) produced a fantastic performance to win the individual silver medal. Joe Hudson (Club: Keighley and Craven, Coach: Alan Buckley / John Dennis) also had a great run to finish 5th and complete the scoring team. Josh Dickinson (Club: City of York, Coach: Ian Wilcock) put in a commendable performance on his international mountain running debut to finish 11th.

Mackay and Brennan have been selected for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland U20 team for the European Mountain Running Championships in Macedonia on 1st July.

The England Junior Women improved their finishing position from 7th last year to 5th, led home by Rosie Woodhams (Club: Kendal AC, Coach: Steve Priestly) in 11th and Emily Field (Club: Bingley Harriers, Coach: Karen Glerum / Alan Buckley) in 13th. Woodhams joins Mackay and Brennan in the British U20 team for the European Championships. Eve Pannone (Club: Eden Runners, Coach: Derek Hurton) and Finty Royle (Club: Chorley ATC, Coach: Katie Hewison) both put in excellent performances on their England debuts, finishing 20th and 25th respectively.

Team managers Carol Evans and Duncan Richards said that the athletes were a credit to their country and treated their hosts, opponents and their sport with respect, good humour and total commitment.
