British triumph in Türkiye - your November and December talent round-up

We may be into the final chapter of the year, but the English athletes continue to excel across Europe as well as closer to home! Join us as we take a closer look at the last few weeks of action.

European Cross Country Championships

From the mud of Liverpool to the warmer climates of Türkiye, the British cross country team didn't let a change of weather conditions phase them as they triumphed at the 2024 rendition of the Euro Cross.

Topping the medal table with 12 medals overall, the Great Britain & NI team saw three individual champions crowned in Antalya. Phoebe Anderson [U23 women] (Wayne Vinton, Herne Hill), Will Barnicoat [U23 men] (Tim Eglen, Aldershot, Farnham & District) and Innes Fitzgerald [U20 women] (Gavin Pavey, Exeter) all secured individual titles – the latter two retaining their titles from 2023.

There were also first-time individual medals for Jess Bailey (Dean Miller, Leven Valley) [U20 women – silver], George Couttie (Ben Thomas, Harrogate) [U20 men – silver] and David Stone (Dean Miller, Shaftesbury Barnet) [U23 men – bronze], alongside team medals for six of the seven teams.

Telford 10k

The elite athletes and recreational runners alike travelled to Telford on 15 December to take part in the what claims to be the nation's 'fastest 10k' - not only that but the race also played host to the England 10k Championships.

A narrow course at times, the athletes battled it out to see who would be crowned national champion with Jack Rowe (Aldershot, Farnham & District) taking the men's title in 28:02 to shave five seconds off his personal best. Dropping down from the marathon, Phil Sesemann (Leeds City AC, Andy Henderson) came home in second with 28:28.

In the women's race, Amelia Quirk (Bracknell AC, Mick Woods) just edged out Sarah Astin (Belgrave, Andy Hobdell) to take the crown in 32:40.

Liverpool Cross Country Challenge

A hotly contested competition, the British Cross Country Challenge in Liverpool acted as a challenging qualification race for the Euro Cross in Türkiye. The weather was certainly not on the athlete's side as they battled all of the elements. It was Kate Axford (Belgrave, Andy Henderson) and Tomer Tarragano (Brighton & Hove, Dean Miller) who took the senior race as Innes FitzGerald (Exeter, Gavin Pavey) and Henry Dover (Shaftesbury Barnet) finished on top in the junior races.
