May 2025: Performance round up
May has been a busy month for England teams as they have risen to the challenge of competition on the roads, in the mountains and kickstarted the outdoor track and field season. From England debutants to veterans in the white and red vests, English athletes have excelled this month. Read our round up to discover the highlights!
On the roads
U20 success
A team of eight athletes competed in the 7th Trofeo Opiterguim U20 European Road Race on Thursday 1 May. The England team took on eight nations from across Europe in an exciting race, all athletes showing maturity and an exciting future over the distances. The England women won the U20 silver team prize on cumulative times with Lucy Wilkinson (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow AC, Shireen Higgins) also securing individual bronze.
Following on from the success in Italy, the England U20 development team impressed on the streets of Cardiff at the Race for Victory 5k. The team of nine England athletes secured the top spot in both the men’s and women’s team competitions. There were also individual U20 victories for Herbie Johnson (Luton AC, Gordon Addison) and Katie Pye (Aldershot, Farnham and District, Mick Woods).
100k
It was another hugely successful Anglo-Celtic Plate 100k race for the England Athletics team with team gold for the women and team silver for the men. Additionally, Shaun Dixon (South West Vets AC) secured silver in the British Championships, whilst Kelsey Price (RunHead AC, David Bone) led home the women’s team with a British Championship win.
Masters
Team England and Wales athletes were bathed in glorious Shrewsbury sunshine at this year’s Shrewsbury Festival of Running. The event hosted the first Masters International of the season over 5k. There were great performances across the board from the England team securing 16 category titles, including fastest male and female of the day. This year also saw the addition of a development team, which provided great opportunities for more athletes to represent their country.
Track and field
Loughborough International
The Loughborough International marked the first outdoor competition for many athletes - the cobwebs have well and truly been blown away as England retained their title as champions. There were also qualifying marks achieved by English athletes throughout the day for the U20 and U23 European Championships later this summer and the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Nottwil Para Grand Prix
An England team of five wheelchair athletes headed to Nottwil, Switzerland to compete in the WPA Grand Prix event on one of the fastest wheelchair racing tracks in the world. The athletes were all selected from within our Talent Pathway and stepped up against some of the world’s best wheelchair racers. There were standout performances from Daina Donnelly (Coventry, Job King), Ellis Kottas (Weir Archer Academy, Jenny Archer) and Moatez Jomni (Harlow AC, Richard Chiassaro).
In the mountains
Trofeo Nasego World Cup
The Nasego World Cup Mountain running weekend, held on 24-25 May, featured two races, the Vertical Nasego, which climbs 1000m over a distance of 4.2km, and the classic Trofeo Nasego, a 21.5km up and down race. The England team battled hard against very strong athletes from across the world. After the weekend of running was concluded, they finished 4th in the Six Nations competition.
