An individual gold and team bronzes for England in Italy
A team of nine athletes and 2 team support staff travelled to the small city of Oderzo in northern Italy for the 'Trofeo Opitergium' U20 European Road Race on Wednesday 1 May.
There was an individual win for Jessica Mitchell (Havering AC, Patrick Gahagan) in the U20 women’s 5k in a time of 16:45, just two seconds ahead of Italy’s Angela Mattevi. Her England team mates Becky Briggs (City of Hull AC, Derek Ricketts) took 11th place (17:37), Holly Smith (Vale Royal, Andrew Carter) was 15th (17:59) and Lucy Elms (Dulwich AC) was 28th (19:03). They also took team bronze on cumulative times.
Jem O’Flaherty (London Heathside, Kabir Kemp) and Max Davis (Avon Valley Runners, Steve Williams) led the England team home to another team bronze finishing 6th and 7th respectively in the U20 men’s 10k race. Both athletes were given the same time of 31:54. The race was won by Sweden’s Millan de la Magnell in 31:03. Chris McLeod (Solihull & Smallheath, Andrew Webber) finished 11th (32:08), Ben Preddy (Preston AC, Peter Crook) took 13th (32:47) and Sam Goodchild (Cornwall AC, Diarmuid Devery) was 15th (32:54).
