The course is designed to introduce you to providing safe and enjoyable athletic experiences for young people aged 8+. The course covers warm-ups, the basic principles and underpinning principles of running, jumping, throwing, cool downs, and how to organise safe and fun sessions for a mixed ability group of athletes. The course is made up of four online self-guided learning modules, a 75-minute virtual classroom session and remote feedback from a coach developer of a supervised session (videoed).

This is a new course but we've been running pilot sessions - this is what some of the attendees had to say!
It was great, I learned lots in a short space of time and was able to fit it in around my busy work, family and sporting life far more easily. Joseph
"The online Coaching Assistant course made it accessible for a busy working mum to juggle gaining a qualification alongside volunteering at my local athletics club. Weekends are often booked up with all of life's plans so when the opportunity arose to complete the course online, in my own time, at my own pace I jumped at the chance! The content is clear and resources along with videos are great for supporting planning of my own sessions. The feedback from my practical tasks was timely and useful as well. The encouragement to review and reflect with other coaches has also been a game changer and has opened up opportunity for greater dialogue." Felicity
The distance-based course enabled me to complete it at a pace which allowed me to practice as I was learning. Matt
I think the biggest thing for me is the flexibility the course offered; with it being a virtual offering, it enabled me to take it as classroom is not possible for me. I work full time and I have no childcare support for my two children so would never been able to attend anything at the weekend. Learn at own pace and schedule the practical session around own schedule too. Emily
The course was really helpful to support me in being better able to support the children at the running club. I found the videos great. I really liked the tips, and we also as a club enjoyed the games. Maria
I would certainly recommend anyone who is looking to further develop their athletics coaching to considering taking the new Coaching Assistant course. The virtual element was really engaging - it helps you connect with the subject and learn. Recording the practical elements was actually very positive. Melodie
It was great I could work through the course at my own pace and do it at a time that suited me. It was easy to understand and follow and I learnt a lot along the way.
The junior athletes that I filmed with were super engaged and really bought into helping me achieve the qualification – which was really special. There will always be bloopers! But that is just part of real-life coaching – never work with animals or children! Melodie
You may think you miss the community of practice element by being online but actually that just forces you to engage with other clubs in the area to share ideas and see how they work which is more sustainable in the long term. Emily
It’s a great development to offer an online coaching course. I have quite recently completed a similar coaching course in football and basketball. Mike
Great to be able to work at my own pace, easier to retain information as not overloaded and online questions great to test knowledge. Karen
