First Aid training now included in LiRF and Coaching Assistant courses

UK Athletics (UKA) have made some changes to the requirements of the LiRF and Coaching Assistant qualifications which will take effect from 1 April 2022.

The changes have been brought in by UKA to make sure coaches are trained in safeguarding and first aid as part of their qualification. This is to align with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements under Civil Law and Duty of Care. Adding the Basic First Aid Training Certificate as a mandatory part of entry line qualifications will ensure coaches are given the right level of support, and that they help athletes train in safe environments.

Therefore, people will be automatically enrolled on to online modules for safeguarding and first aid - rather than having to book each separately - when they sign up for a LiRF or Coaching Assistant course. Each module's cost has been added to the overall course price; the base cost of the course has not changed.

Although this is only taking effect at present for entry level courses, UKA strongly recommends that all existing Coaches and Leaders also have an in-date first aid qualification. The module can also be taken as a stand-alone training (£15). Course attendees already holding a First Aid qualification can just complete the test at the end of the First Aid module to validate their knowledge.

As a sport, and in partnership with UKA, we want people to get excited about participating in athletics and running. That is why, as outlined within our strategy through to 2032, we are committed to supporting and developing affiliated clubs to be safe, sustainable, and welcoming environments for all and ensure they meet the minimum standards for safeguarding and welfare.
