Women's Throws Coach Community Group launching soon

Are you a current or aspiring female throws coach? We are pleased to share that England Athletics is launching a brand-new Women's Throws Coach Community Group to build a strong, supportive network of female throws coaches.

The group will enable participants to connect, share knowledge and inspire the next generation of women in coaching.

Throws has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated coaching environment which presents systemic barriers to female coaches - including gender bias, lack of support, and limited confidence. Female role models and mentors are vital for encouraging women into coaching. Creating woman-led support networks can combat isolation, build confidence, and promote career development.

The group will aim to achieve the following:

  • Create a sense of community and relatedness between female throws coaches
  • Act as a stepping stone into the community of practice of each throws event
  • Create a support network for female throws coaches going through challenging situations
  • Create a space for female coaches to share coaching practice and learn from each other
  • Instil confidence and self-efficacy into female coaches to allow them to reach their full potential and take every opportunity given to them.
  • Inspire other women to get into coaching

Supportive webinar series

The members of the group will attend a series of eight webinars including areas such as; overcoming imposter syndrome, recognising your strengths, developing a confident coaching philosophy, building authority, along with many others.

The webinars will take place between September and December 2025. The hope is following the webinar series the group will continue to stay connected through a WhatsApp group, additional webinars and potentially in-person development sessions.

Leader of the Group and Talent Event Lead for Hammer, Katie Lambert explains:

"Last year, only 4 of the 39 personal coaches whose athletes made British or English international throws teams were women. The lack of visible woman role models in throws coaching makes it far less likely for female athletes to pursue that path themselves. This group aims to build a strong, supportive community of female throws coaches, to enable connection, share knowledge, and inspire the next generation of women in coaching."

National Throws Manager, Nick Ridgeon, added:

"I think this initiative is fantastic. I’m so glad Katie is taking a lead on it and will be supported by my colleague, National Speed Manager, Shani Palmer. We know we need to expand, strengthen, and diversify the throws coaching community, and I think this group is an amazing way to help us achieve that.

"In addition to this group's work we will be reviewing all the throws environments we create from local club coach development workshops, right through to international throws teams to ensure we are working toward making them all as inclusive to all as possible."
