The Green Runners nominated for BBC Green Sport Award

We are pleased to share that our sustainability partners, The Green Runners, have been nominated for a BBC Green Sport Award.

Into its third year, the Awards celebrate the good work of athletes and organisations in trying to enact and inspire change to support the future of our planet.

A partnership pioneering change

In 2022, we were proud to launch our sustainability strategy, outlining our commitment to supporting best practice across the organisation, and our network of 1800 affiliated clubs and 3400 RunTogether groups. As part of this, we were pleased to partner with The Green Runners to build useful tips and resources to guide clubs and member bodies make more sustainable choices. Since the launch of our partnership, we have supported The Green Runners with different campaigns such as the 'Running Out Of Time Relay' and creating a brand new network of Greener Clubs and Green Champions throughout the country.

BBC Green Sport Award

We are delighted to see that The Green Runners have been recognised for their fantastic work in helping the running community become more sustainable in this year's BBC Green Sport Awards. Started in the UK, The Green Runners are now a global volunteer community involving thousands of runners across the world who all strive to create a 'fitter planet' both in terms of health and sustainability.

The winners will be announced on 7 October, and we wish all at The Green Runners the very best of luck!

What's next for The Green Runners?

The Green Runners has launched an ambitious project called 'Race for Change' aimed at creating an empowered international community of runners to bring about individual and collective action for the environment.

The not-for-profit plans to raise £50,000 through a crowdfunding campaign, which will allow the group to expand its work to help runners live more sustainably, as well as bring about change in the running industry and events.

Supporting this Crowdfund will help The Green Runners build a small, dedicated team to manage and scale their projects. Projects like The Greener Clubs partnership with England Athletics, A Greener Races scheme for race directors and events, rolling out the Local Groups pilot to connect members and growing memberships to scale their collective voice and create lasting impact.

Ross Brannigan, Community and Content Manager for The Green Runners, said:

The climate emergency is a problem we cannot run away from. For the last two years, every Green Runner who has pledged to make a change in their lives for the planet is taking genuine action for our environment. Now, it’s about expanding that work, working with clubs and communities across the world, and collaborating with brands and events. This crowdfund does not just affect runners; it affects all of us, and we can make a genuine difference in this time of crisis.”

You can support the campaign with as little as £5.
