Success at Regional Throws Training Days

Delivered by England Athletics talent development coaches, our Regional Throws Training Days have now concluded for 2025/6 and have been a great success!

Welcoming both club-based athletes, ambulant athletes and their personal coaches, the regional days focus on training, competition preparation and technique. This year, there have been 14 different days delivered across the country, focusing on each of the throwing events (javelin, discus, hammer and shot), with 204 athletes and 102 coaches attending. We also held a bespoke seated throws development day in the autumn, led by expert Dr Alison O'Riordan. Take a look back at the seated throws round up video here.

At England Athletics, we are passionate about development and shared learning, it is therefore crucial that club and personal coaches are also welcomed to both our National and Regional Training Days and workshops. The focus of each session is to ensure that coaches from clubs across the country are given the relevant skills to develop athletes that are skilful and powerful into championship performers.

One coach mentioned: "It was great to get new ideas for technical and physical development, it much improved my understanding of planning and reviewing sessions." Whilst another added: "The coaches broke everything down to the basics which was really beneficial and revealed things I hadn't even noticed."

Some of the key learnings shared with the athletes and coaches were:

  • Better technical understanding of the events (footwork, low points, rhythm, posture).
  • Huge variety of drills across strength and conditioning, warm-up, and technique.
  • Importance of mobility, plyometrics, and age-appropriate strength and conditioning.
  • Enhanced coaching insight, especially understanding athlete individuality.
  • RAMP warm-up framework.

Speaking about the importance of the Regional Throws Training Days National Event Manager for Throws, Nick Ridgeon, said:

"It is fantastic to work with our network of highly skilled event leads and national level throws coaches to deliver such an impactful series of workshops. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and it's great to see first hand the takeaways and improvements athletes have gained from attending. I would like to thank all of the athletes and personal coaches for their support, and to the talent development coaches for their dedication in facilitating such engaging and interactive sessions."

Some parent and athletes provided their positive thoughts through our feedback form:

"My daughter had a fabulous time and learned loads. She came away inspired to work harder and achieve more."

"It was a brilliant day - the coaches were generous with their time, advice and support. I learned loads!"

The regional throws training days have now ended for this winter, however keep an eye on our regional athlete development opportunities web page for when the next dates are announced. We are currently reviewing and planning our delivery for 2026/7, to continue supporting more throwers and their personal coaches to transition through the England Athletics talent pathway and beyond.
