Sign your club or running group up to Let's Lift the Curfew 2025!
Calling all runners, running groups and clubs! We'd like to invite you to join or put on your own local Let's Lift the Curfew event in the week commencing Monday 27 October, to raise awareness and promote a safer environment for women to engage in physical activities.
Let’s Lift the Curfew is an initiative created and spearheaded by Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign and supported by England Athletics.
It has been running since October 2023, highlighting women’s stories and concerns around getting active outdoors in the darker months. Alongside this, it has called on wider society to acknowledge their role in making getting active outdoors safer for women.

We are also inviting running groups and clubs to put on their own local Let’s Lift The Curfew run in the week commencing Monday 27 October (marking the official end of summertime), to keep raising awareness of the campaign within your communities.
If you're in a running group with a run taking place that week anyway, why not make your run a Let's Lift the Curfew run to help the cause and join the campaign?

Choose a suitable meeting spot
To make it easier for groups to meet safely, England Athletics has arranged for some Greene King pubs* to be available as meeting points. Think well-lit car parks for easy meet-ups and dry, spacious event areas perfect for warm-ups and cool-downs. Just share your postcode or the pub name in the form and we’ll do the rest to help make it happen!
We understand this won’t suit every group, so feel free to speak with your runners and community to see what works best for them.
Some ideas of things you might like to consider:
- Is there a regular evening run that is already hosted in your area that could be turned into a Let's Lift The Curfew event this winter?
- Who are the women in your wider networks who you could invite to join your run?
- Which communities live in your area who Let's Lift The Curfew would resonate with?
- Log a walk, run or cycle on Strava – at a time you feel safe doing so – and label it 'Let’s Lift The Curfew'.
Tell us about your plans!

England Athletics CEO, Chris Jones, said:
“We want to help make athletics and running as safe, enjoyable and accessible for all as possible, and Let’s Lift the Curfew is a key part of encouraging women to be active in ways that work for them, regardless of age, background or ability.
“Through the campaign, we’re calling on wider society to acknowledge their role in making getting active outdoors safer for women.”
Director of Marketing at Sport England and This Girl Can, Kate Dale, added:
“Many women already feel excluded from the world of exercise – and this is heightened by safety fears around being active outdoors during the dark winter months.
“Safety fears should never prevent women getting active – but the sad reality is that they are a major barrier. That’s why we’re proud to be in the third year of Let’s Lift the Curfew, raising awareness and calling for change, and we are grateful for the support from England Athletics. While progress has been made, our work is far from done, and we continue to call for wider cultural awareness and education for allyship with women. Everyone is invited and welcome to join us.”
