Red hot masters half marathon international in Swansea
The third race of this years Masters Representative Races was the half marathon which was held as part of the Mizuno Swansea Half Marathon. Starting in the city centre the athletes followed the coast road towards the Mumbles, before turning and making their way back to the city centre.
While the weather was cool and blustery the competition was red hot with all four competing teams (England, Wales, Northern Ireland and UK Armed Forces) achieving medal success. The United Kingdom Armed Forces (UKAF) stormed to victory in both the M35 and M40 categories. M35 William Ewens (UKAF) finished 8th overall in the main race in 68:43, while M40 Adam Baker (UKAF) was 5th overall in 68:15.
Darlington Magalela (Long Eaton Running Club, England) had a fabulous run and was delighted to take the M45 category with a time of 1:11.50. He was followed home by England team mate Ashley Abrahams (Barnsley AC) in 1:13.14. It was an England clean sweep in the M60 category with Tony Wright (Cornwall AC) taking gold in 1:16.11, ahead of Robert McGrath (Northern Masters AC) in 1:19.33, and Boyd Park (Southport Waterloo AC) in 1:19.39.
In the women's race, England took the spoils in the W35 category with Christa Cain (Best Athletics) following up her success at the Bideford 10k to take half marathon gold in 1:15.11. Alison McEwing (Erme Valley Harriers) took silver in 1:18.32, and Rachel Doherty (Higham Harriers) bronze in 1:21.48. It was a different story in the W40 category where England were shut out of the podium positions by Gemma Moore (Wales) in 1:22.10, Dawn Blain (NI) in 1:23.53, and Hannah Thomas (Wales) in 1:24.13. Dawn was delighted to go away with silver, a new PB, and Northern Ireland’s second ever medal in the race series.
England were back to winning ways in the W45 race with a win for Lisa Bailey (The Stragglers Running Club) in 1:17.22. There was another England clean sweep in the W70 position with Barbara Stevens (Mansfield Harriers) winning in 1:42.37, followed by Dot Kesterton (Steel City Striders) in 1:45.43, and Jackie Tombs (Gosport Road Runners) in 1:51.17.
