Podcast #28: Holly Mills and Laura Turner-Alleyne
Episode #28 of the England Athletics podcast:
Holly Mills is one of Britain's most exciting young talents - a winner of multiple titles in the long jump - she decided to take on the challenge of switching to the heptathlon in 2018. Three years later, the 21-year-old is in contention to compete at the Olympic Games after forming a great partnership with Olympic sprinter and Commonwealth gold medallist Laura Turner-Alleyne, her coach.
"I competed for GB 10 years in a row as a senior - I look back now and think 'my goodness, that's pretty good actually' - but when you're in it, you don't appreciate it." - Laura Turner-Alleyne
You'll hear how the change towards multi-events has been approached mentally and physically, as Holly explains that her big recent improvements have come as a result of incredible hard work.
"We've just been chipping away at the same rock for so long and then all of a sudden you just get a massive crack and you break through." - Holly Mills
Holly says her big heptathlon improvements may come as a surprise to those watching, but they are no shock to her and her coach.
"Vast improvements and PBs and heptathlon scores, I experience very differently to the audience watching because I'm there doing the training day in, day out. I see all of the really bad sessions, the really good sessions and the tiny little increments that we improve by day-by-day, week-by-week are so small but really significant at the same time." - Holly Mills
Also in this episode, Kelly Sotherton discusses England Athletics' Commonwealth Games selection policy for Birmingham 2022 - with Holly Mills having also shared her dream of competing in Birmingham.
It couldn't be more perfect really - the Commonwealth Games being in Birmingham next year - it would be an absolutely incredible experience to be able to compete in front of a home crowd." - Holly Mills
