Plethora of PBs at England Athletics SW Region Champs

The annual SW Region Club and County Track and Field Championships took place in hot and sunny conditions in Exeter. There was an impressing entry of over 525 athletes all of which had to achieve qualifying standards just to get there.

There were over 200 personal bests set plus a number of season’s best. A total of fourteen new championship bests were set. One of those was in the U20 women’s Pole Vault where Molly Caudery - (Club: Cornwall AC/ Thames Valley, Coach: Stuart Caudery) who has been selected to compete in the European Championships in Berlin - vaulted an impressive 4.20m.

Among the other records there were two from Danielle Broome (Club: Bournemouth, Coach: Paul Rees) representing Dorset; she set records in the U20 women’s Hammer and Discus. In a very fast 1500m for U13 boys Poole AC’s William Rabjohns (Coach: Mark Pauley) also representing Dorset recorded the fastest time in the UK this year with an impressive time of 4.25.59. Charlie Hague of Exeter was second and also inside the old record with a time of 4.37.73 The first five over the line all set PBs.

Bea Wood of City of Salisbury AC and Dorset AA (Coach: Dave Amey) continued her recent impressive form setting a new record of 4.33.49 in the 1500m for U15 girls. There was also an impressive performance in the U15 girl’s Triple jump where Torbay’s Georgia Scoot (Coach: Stephen Cottle) went to 3rd in the UK with a jump of 11.07m.

Overall the event was an outstanding success and Regional Chair Keith Reed said “It was really great to see such impressive performances from SW athletes. The event was superbly organised by David Cooke who is the portfolio holder for Track and Field and the fantastic team of officials from all over the region who worked so very hard in hot conditions. We look forward to putting on other great event in the region”

In the overall Inter-counties match Wiltshire won both the men’s and women’s event.
