Oswestry Olympians: How joining a club can foster a sense of belonging
Joining a club offers many benefits beyond physical fitness. We recently caught up with Oswestry Olympians’ Social Media Secretary and Run Leader, Oscar Simmons, to find out how transitioning from a solo runner to a club athlete has had a positive impact on his life and sense of belonging.

Like Oscar, many people start running to improve their fitness, but joining a club can play a key role not only in athletic development but also in supporting overall well-being and building a strong sense of community.
“After a few months of running solo, I thought, why not join a local club? That’s when I became a member of Oswestry Olympians. I saw it as a chance to not only improve my fitness but also learn more about the sport and meet like-minded people. At the time, I had no idea just how much of a positive impact it would have on my life, both physically and socially.
“Joining a club turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.”
Oscar also reflected on the wider community he’s now part of through the club’s affiliation with England Athletics.
“It feels great to be part of the England Athletics family. It’s more than just being in a club – it’s a nationwide community that shares the same love for running. I’ve had access to valuable resources, support, and opportunities to learn and grow as a runner. It’s really boosted my confidence and helped me connect with some brilliant people.”
Being part of a club offers more than just structured training sessions. It provides a supportive environment where runners of all levels feel encouraged and included.
“From day one, everyone was so welcoming. It felt like I’d joined a group of mates who just happened to love running. Whether it’s at training, races, or chatting in group chats, there’s always a sense of support and encouragement. No matter your pace or experience, you feel included. It’s not just about running faster – it’s about being part of something that lifts you up and makes it all more fun.”

Oscar’s involvement in the club has evolved from a way to keep fit into a deeper connection to the sport that has extended to leadership and volunteering. He now plays an active role in the club’s leadership, recently qualifying as a Run Leader and serving on the committee as Social Media and Press Secretary.
“I’ve made loads of great friends, and it’s opened up a whole new social side of life, with meet-ups and activities that go beyond running. The club has made me a stronger, faster runner – but it’s also boosted my confidence and given me a real sense of purpose and belonging.
“Training to become a Run Leader really brought things full circle, as it links closely with my role as a Learning and Development Manager. It’s been great to see how the skills I use in my professional life, like communication and leadership, are just as valuable in a running setting.”
Oscar is also proud of the club’s wider involvement in the local community. One standout experience for him came during a very different kind of event which gave him the chance to contribute in a more creative way:
“In 2023, I helped lead the organisation of an Oswestry Olympians float for the Oswestry Christmas Parade. It was the first time the club had ever done something like this. It was such a joyful event that really captured what the club is all about: teamwork, fun, creativity and community spirit. Not only was it a brilliant way to celebrate with fellow members, but it also helped raise awareness in the local community about everything the club has to offer.
“It was one of those moments that reminded me how powerful sport can be in bringing people together.”

Oscar also expressed his appreciation for the passionate volunteers who keep the club running smoothly:
“There are so many dedicated volunteers at our club who keep everything running smoothly. From committee members to Run Leaders and coaches, each one plays a vital role. Without them, the club simply wouldn’t function.”
Whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, build your confidence, or find a sense of belonging, joining a club can make a lasting difference to your overall well-being.
