Loughborough International Athletics - selection policy announced

The Loughborough International provides an important competition opportunity for the athletes selected to represent England.

This year, as the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast of Australia in 2018 approach, the event has added significance. England Athletics wants to build the best possible team for the Gold Coast over the next 18 months. This includes developing the pool of athletes with the potential to compete for England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, as well as the coaches and team staff required to give the best level of support.

It is also our aim to use the build-up to the Games to engage with clubs and competition providers to connect the England team with track and field and running in England. The Loughborough International on 22nd May is an early step on this pathway.

England Athletics will aim to field the best possible team at the Loughborough International. The primary purpose of the selections will be to enable the best athletes in England to compete internationally. The secondary aim of selections for the team will be to contribute to the development of potential Commonwealth Games 2018 athletes via way of exposure to international competition and environment.

Given the statements above selection will be made from consideration of;

1. Current form (including indoor competition since January 2016 where this is applicable)
2. Form from 2015. Coaches and athletes wanting to be considered from 2015 performance marks must give any relevant current information.
3. Commonwealth Games potential will only be judged and applied where there is an unclear selection based on 1. and 2. and in the selectors opinion exposure to an international environment would benefit their development
4. Athletes with minimal 2015 and indoor 2016 form are likely to have to show some early season performance to gain consideration.

Selection is currently planned for Tuesday 10th May.
