July 2026: performance round up

Headlined by the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, July saw outstanding performances from English athletes at every level. From two England Athletics Championships in Bedford to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Snowdon International Mountain Race to the masters 5k race in Shrewsbury, let’s look back on the action in our July performance round up.

What a performance for Team England in Glasgow

Team England excelled at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow! We have witnessed some incredible athletics this week with England finishing the Games with a total of 21 medals including six golds. These gold medals were won by:

• Sophie Hahn (Joe McDonnell, Charnwood AC) – T38 100m
• Thomas Young (Joe McDonnell, Loughborough Students) – T38 100m
• Zac Shaw (Leon Baptiste, Cleethorpes AC) – T12 100m
• Georgia Hunter Bell (Trevor Painter/Jenny Meadows, Belgrave Harriers) – 800m
• Jazmin Sawyers (Aston Moore, City of Stoke AC) – long jump
• Nathan Maguire (Steven Hoskins/Pete Wyman, Kirkby AC) – T54 1500m

Lots of national titles won at the England Athletics Championships

July kicked off with our Senior and U20 Track and Field and Combined Events Championships, powered by Citroën, which saw U20 athletes looking to qualify for the upcoming World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon. There were multiple Championships Best Performances from athletes qualifying for those championships and those doing final preparations for the Commonwealth Games. We even saw an age group world record in the M45 triple jump for Tosin Oke (Woodford Green and Essex Ladies).

Next up, it was the turn of the next generation of young athletes in the England Athletics Age Group and Junior Para Championships, powered by Citroën. From the very first long jump that opened two days of intense excitement and drama to the long sprints that brought the first day to a close it was all about PBs, UK leading performances and on more than one occasion, a world class result. The excitement continued on day two as two new U16 British records were set within five minutes in the boys’ 300m and shot put competitions.

The latest Masters Representative race

The Masters Representative 5k race in Shrewsbury is always a keenly anticipated fixture by the athletes. It certainly lived up to expectations with competitive races across all the age groups between England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom Armed Forces.

A close contest on the tallest peak in Wales

Two strong England teams took to the start line of this year’s Snowdon International Mountain Race. Both Italian teams performed well to top the men’s and women’s international team podiums, but in the Senior Home International England’s men claimed the title, while the women finished just one point behind Scotland in a close contest.

There’s plenty more athletics and running action in the coming weeks with England teams due to compete at: 

• Antrim Coast Half Marathon: 23 August 
• Junior Mountain Running Home International: 12 September

Lots of English athletes have also been selected to represent Great Britain & Northern Ireland at the upcoming European Championships in Birmingham.
