Top tips - your first running event

Going along to your first race ever, or returning after a period away can be daunting, but the key is it doesn’t have to be! Here are some tips on how to tackle your first race day experience.

  1. Prepare, prepare, prepare! Make sure you are fully clued up on the race. This could include the distance, having a scan of the route map, where to park, closest transport etc – the list goes on! If you have prepared all the information you need to know in advance, your race day will run a lot smoother, especially once the nerves build up and you may forget things. Taking a look over the race profile can also be useful so you know where the trickier points in the race may be so you can anticipate them rather than fear them.
  2. Don’t try anything new: Whether it is a longer run requiring in-race nutrition or a 5k – don’t try anything new on race day. This could be a new breakfast, a new warm up because someone else is doing it, or box-fresh trainers. Have peace of mind that you have done your prep, know your body and feet, and go through the motions that you are familiar with. Not only will this get you in the correct mindset to run, but it also reduces the risk of blisters, injury or the dreaded unexpected trip to the toilet!
  3. Set your kit out the night before: If you have received your race bib/number in advance, why not pin this on your race top the night before. People love a kit flat-lay pic! If you still need to pick up your number, ensure you have left enough time, know where to collect it, and take safety pins. Most races will have a pin pot on hand in case you forget, but one less thing to worry about if you are prepared.
  4. Plan your transport: If you are racing in central London vs the Cumbrian countryside, you will need to factor in very different travel plans. Check your closest station, whether there is parking, and whether the race starts and finishes in the same spot. All of these factors can change your race day plans and experience.
  5. Enjoy it! For most people, the reason we run is for pure enjoyment. Sure, you may have other reasons alongside such as for a loved one, to support your mental or physical health, but ultimately running is supposed to be fun. Even when you are at the tail end of your race, try to smile, soak in the atmosphere and relish the cheers – you have trained so hard for this moment and the medal is just a few km away!
