England Team announced for Loughborough International
We are delighted to announce the athletes selected to compete for England at the Loughborough International on Sunday (23 May).
It will be the first time in more than 18-months that a track and field team has proudly represented the country on home soil since the Manchester International in August 2019.
As the sport continues to rebuild following COVID-19, this annual early season team competition in Loughborough is a significant step forward on the journey to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Whilst the event will have a different feel compared to previous Loughborough Internationals, with strict Covid-secure protocols in place and no supporters permitted, it remains a brilliant opportunity for the selected athletes to showcase their talent, hard work, and dedication to their sport.
England’s 52 athletes, 23 women and 29 men, will be up against teams representing Loughborough University, Scotland, Wales and Great Britain and Northern Ireland Under-20s.
Kelly Sotherton, England’s Track and Field Team Leader for Birmingham 2022, said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming all the athletes and congratulate them, their coaches and clubs, on being selected for what promises to be a really exciting Loughborough International. It will be fantastic to see an England track and field team competing again and our thanks go to everyone involved in making this event possible. Seeing the gradual return of the domestic calendar is hugely encouraging for the sport and it’s great that more and more athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers are able to get back to doing what they love.”
All of us at England Athletics also offer our best wishes to the English athletes competing in Gateshead at the Diamond League on Sunday, and at other events over the weekend, and hope these all go well for everyone involved.
As evidenced last week with the launch of our exciting new 12-year strategy for athletics and running, we are committed to creating opportunities, enhancing experiences and powering potential by working together as a sport.
This includes, as one of our five key focus areas, working with partners to create and support inclusive athlete-centred talent pathways which enable athletes and their coaches to develop, progress and improve performances in all disciplines at every level.
