England impress at the inaugural Masters International Trail race

The annual Forest of Dean Autumn Trail Half Marathon, organised by The Rotary Club of the Royal Forest of Dean, played host to the inaugural Masters International Trail race last weekend. Once again England went head to head with old adversaries Wales over a hilly and challenging 13.1 mile route. The race produced a number of outstanding performances.

Men's over 35 podium

The runners set off in glorious Autumn sunshine as they made their way into the forest, where they battled it out over the undulating twists and turns of the forest trails.

Bursting out of the forest to take the overall race win, as well as the M35 category, was Lee Gratton in a time of 69:48. Meanwhile, the W35 category saw the closest race of the day, with Katie Latham (England) wining by two seconds from Bethan Logan (Wales). In the M40 and W40 categories Zared Arasaretnam-Hale and Ellie Monks took the spoils with the latter recording the fastest female time of the day.

England and Wales athletes at Masters trail race

England’s Gary Marshall (M45) claimed the win and was joined by Joanne Henderson (F45) who impressed for Wales. Welsh success continued via the excellent Mark Jennings (M50) with Carolyn Hay (W50) duly impressing for the host nation. Dave Parkin and Tracy Jenkins excelled themselves in the 55 age group while in the 60 category Mike Whyatt (M60) and Rosemary McGhee (W60) produced eye catching performances.

There was a Welsh double in the 65 age group courtesy of Dave Warren and Linda Tyler, while Paul Morris (England) and Fiona Davies (Wales) triumphed in the 70 age group. At the top age group, it was England who did the double with Graham Newton (M75) and the evergreen Angela Copson (F75) taking victory.

Next up is the Masters Representative Marathon in Abingdon on the 19 October.
