Celebrating inclusivity and impact: West Midlands Club of the Year, Shropshire Shufflers

Shropshire Shufflers were named Club of the Year in the West Midlands at our recent Volunteer Awards. With over 600 members, the club is proud to be one of the largest running clubs in the country, but it’s their warm, supportive atmosphere that truly sets them apart.

We spoke to members of the club to find out what makes their community so special.

Supporting every runner

One of the club’s key aims is encouraging more people to run, and their commitment to inclusivity is evident in everything they do. Club Chair, John Short shared:

“We actually had 80 people turn up to our beginners’ group in January, which is a phenomenal number!”

The Shufflers offer a structured group system (Foundation, Intermediate, Higher and Returners), ensuring that runners of all abilities feel confident and supported. Coaching Co-ordinator Chris Whitely explained how the club continues to grow its leadership team:

“Every year we actively welcome invitations for new Run Leaders and coaches. This year we’re bringing in another ten Run Leaders and supporting them through their journey.”

Making a difference in the community

Beyond running, the Shufflers are deeply committed to making a positive impact in their local community. John highlighted their work with visually impaired athletes:

“We’ve got 12 people now who are qualified as guide runners. We can offer that for the club but we also offer that for our local parkrun.”

Chris also spoke about their buggy running sessions, which have become a lifeline for many new parents:

“The parents find it exceptionally welcoming. They find it really good for their mental wellbeing and that they can run and also get a little bit of social time with other parents whilst also spending time with their children.

“It also shows them off as being a really positive role model to their children.”

The club’s charitable efforts are equally impressive. Women’s Captain Shona shared:

“Last year we raised money for the MNDA charity, which is a charity that was close to lots of our members. This year we are raising money for a local children’s hospice charity. Throughout the year, we do runs where we collect things for the local foodbank.”

In total, the club donated an incredible £10,000 to charity last year, and they’re determined to build on that success.

A club that changes lives

For many members, joining Shropshire Shufflers has been life-changing. One athlete told us:

“The club has given me a whole new lease of life, it has given me new goals. It’s a great vibe.”

Another member added:

“It’s just a real community spirit, and it doesn’t matter where you are in your running journey, there’s something for everyone.”

Club Chair John summed it up perfectly:

“We encourage people of all speeds, all goals, all ambitions, and there’s no difference between any of those people. They’re all part of the club and they’re all here to be Shufflers.”

From beginners to marathoners, from buggy runners to guide runners, the Shropshire Shufflers are united by a shared belief that running is for everyone. Their inclusive ethos, community spirit, and dedication to making a difference make them a shining example of what a running club can be.
