Building confidence, connection, and development opportunities for female throws coaches
The England Athletics Female Coaches' Community was established to provide a dedicated space for female coaches to connect, develop, and share experiences. Over the duration of the programme, the community has engaged 73 members, fostering a supportive network within a population that can often experience isolation.
The initiative was enhanced through partnership with UK Strength and Conditioning Association female coaches and supported by the Female Coach Network, who facilitated access to expert insight and external speakers.
A total of eight sessions were delivered, focusing on relevant topics to female coaches, including imposter syndrome, managing setbacks, and building and sustaining professional networks. A highlight of the programme was a guest session delivered by Ashley Kovacs, who provided valuable insight and contributed to the overall quality of the learning experience.
Developing a connected coaching community
A central outcome of the programme was the creation of a strong and engaged network. One participant noted:
"It is always good to be part of something bigger than just your local club."
Participants were able to exchange knowledge, reflect on shared experiences, and build meaningful professional relationships beyond their immediate coaching environments.
"It was great to be able to connect with so many like-minded individuals in such a supportive environment."
Progression into further development
The community also served as a pathway into wider coach development opportunities. Through regional coach development days and masterclasses, 30 female coaches progressed into further learning and in-person delivery environments.
Measurable impact
Pre- and post-programme evaluation identified the most significant improvements in:
- Self-belief
- Sense of belonging
- Motivation to continue coaching
These findings demonstrate the value of structured communities in supporting both the personal and professional development of female coaches. Feedback mentioned participants were encouraged to believe in themselves and not to be afraid to ask for support. One of the coaches said:
"Just talking about throws, sharing experiences and bringing in external speakers helps learning and inspires."
Group founder Katie Lambert reflected on the programme’s impact:
"This group became something so much bigger than I ever imagined it would be. I’m really proud of the network and connections we managed to build. Everyone’s engagement and willingness to share provided such valuable insight and experience."
Future direction
The Female Coaches' Community has established a strong foundation for continued engagement, development, and collaboration. By combining peer support with structured learning opportunities, it contributes meaningfully to a more inclusive and sustainable coaching landscape within athletics.
