World University Games Selection Policy published

The 2019 World University Games will be held in Naples from 3rd to 14th July and England Athletics and the other home country federations, in cooperation with British Athletics will be responsible for selecting and facilitating a team to compete at these games.

This opportunity is part of British Athletics and the home nations taking a strategic approach to international age group and university competitions.

Spencer Duval, Team Leader for the World University Games, said, “By working with the other home countries and having the support of British Athletics we are able to offer this opportunity for athletes across the home countries.

“We trust that this will be an opportunity that is of benefit to all those selected. We also know the value of athletes having championships to target in giving motivation and inspiration in seeking to improve their performances to be competitive at an even higher level.

“For many athletes their time at university is an important stage of their athletic development and so it feels particularly appropriate that we will be able to take a British team to the World University Games.

“I would encourage all the athletes considering targeting this event, and their coaches, to read the full selection policy.”

The full policy can be downloaded at www.uka.org.uk/performance/2019-selection-policies/.

Note that British Athletics will also be sending a team to the 2019 European Under 23 Championships which will be considered the priority competition for U23 athletes in 2019. Under 20 athletes will only be eligible for selection for the 2019 European U20 Championships.

Any U23 athlete (i.e. those born in 1997, 1998, or 1999) who wishes to prioritise the World University Games over the European U23 Championships (except for sprinters and some hurdlers – see paragraph 1.5 of the selection policy) must contact Spencer Duval sduval@englandathletics.org, Team Leader for the World University Games by 1st May 2019.

In all cases, selection only represents a nomination to BUCS for their ratification and will be conditional on athletes signing the BUCS Team Members’ Agreement (“TMA”). The final decision regarding selection for the Games lies with BUCS.
