Växjö Team Announced

The England team for this weekend’s 2022 Växjö Indoor Throw competition in Sweden has been named.

Representing the Red Roses for the trip is a 14-strong squad featuring a mixture of athletes across different age groups and talent programmes along the talent pathway.

There are call-ups for senior athletes including Sophie McKinna, who will be captaining England and has her sights set on glory at the world indoors and outdoors, Europeans, and 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, through to Zara Obamakinwa, who is on the England Athletics Youth Talent Programme and is hoping to qualify for the world U20s in Cali, Columbia.

Indeed, all the athletes have been selected for the meet in Sweden this Saturday 12 February as they are focused on competing in 2022 at senior world indoors and outdoors, senior European outdoors, Commonwealth Games, the U23 European Throwing Cup, or the U20 world outdoor championships.

Developing and supporting the country’s high-performing athletes across all ages, event groups, and disciplines is one of the key focus areas of the England Athletics strategy through to 2032 and is linked to our Journey to 2022 campaign – celebrating England’s hosting of a ‘home’ Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Nick Ridgeon, England Athletics Event Group Lead for Throws, who will be joined at the event by Team Manager Sarah Friday and Team Lead Mark Chapman, said: “For some of the senior England athletes, this competition will give them the chance to dust off a few cobwebs ahead of a busy schedule featuring the UK Winter Long Throws Championship (27 February) and the UK Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham (26 and 27 February).

“For the younger athletes in the team, this will be a brilliant development opportunity with the chance to experience everything that comes with competing for England internationally. From travelling overseas to competing alongside and learning from the likes of team captain Sophie McKinna, who is part of the British Athletics World Class Programme and a World, European, Olympic and Commonwealth Games athlete. All these opportunities that come with competing internationally will help set up the less experienced athletes not just for the coming outdoor season but hopefully many years to come.”
