Team England athletes celebrate St George’s Day

High jumper Laura Zialor was one of the Team England athlete hopefuls for Birmingham 2022 who joined a special St George’s Day celebration in the city.

Laura, who trains out of the Birmingham Talent Hub and is a University of Birmingham sport scholarship student, was in awe of a giant St George flag which adorned the city’s Town Hall building to mark the day (23 April).

The flag, which measured a whopping 52m wide by 8m high, was the backdrop for the event which saw community groups and representatives of Birmingham City Council joining English athletes from a range of different Commonwealth Games sports.

Laura said: “When I arrived this morning and saw the flag I just thought ‘wow’, I literally got my phone out straight away and took a video of it because it’s the biggest flag I have ever seen. It’s going to be amazing to have a home Commonwealth Games – I am just so excited, I can’t wait for it to start.”

Birmingham is set to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games this summer, the biggest multi-sport event to take place in England for a decade, the last one being the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics.
