Halle Throwing Days preview

This weekend sees the return of Halle Throwing Days 2022 in Hallesche Werfertage (Germany), where the most prominent names in throwing will battle it out to be crowned champion.

For our English athletes, this will be the perfect opportunity to be immersed in a highly competitive field in a bid to secure selection for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games this summer.

Flying the English flag in the men’s shot put will be Olympian and seven-time British outdoor champion, Scott Lincoln (Paul Wilson, City of York AC). Making his debut at the Tokyo Olympic Games last year, this summer is set to be a busy season for the British number 1, with a World Championships, home Commonwealth Games and the European Championships on the horizon.

The female shot putters will also be in action this weekend, with Sophie McKinna (Paul Wilson, Great Yarmouth) and Amelia Strickler (Zane Duquemin, Thames Valley Harriers) aiming for those all-important distances with major championship team spots also up for grabs.

Last weekend at the Norfolk County Championships Sophie McKinna was crowned champion with a distance of 17.36m, which she will be looking to push in a strong field of shot putters.

Speaking about the opportunities ahead of this weekend’s competition, Commonwealth Games Team Leader Kelly Sotherton said:

"Hallesche Werfertage is a world class competition environment. It’s really important to support athletes to get to the best competitions so they can perform with the best athletes. This is a great opportunity for Scott, Sophie and Amelia to improve on their season bests and set themselves up for a jam-packed summer."
