Race walking events normally take place on the track or road. Standard senior championships distances on the road are 20K and 50K with different distances contested for age groups. Races over distances such as 3K, 5K and 10K are also held with these also being contested in a number of track championships and leagues.
In race walking there are specific rules about the walking action that competitors have to use, and specifically qualified judges monitor the competitors throughout the competition. The competitors must take their steps so that no loss of contact visible to the human eye occurs. The leg must be straightened (so not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until in the vertical upright position. Full details are available in the UKA Rules of Competition (Rule 230).
