Regional Volunteer Awards 2026

Athletics and running happens because of the dedication and passion of our incredible volunteers. From club committees and coaches to officials and event helpers, their commitment keeps our sport thriving in communities across the country.

The Regional Volunteer Awards, delivered in partnership with our Regional Councils, are our way of saying thank you. They shine a spotlight on the individuals and clubs who go above and beyond, celebrating the outstanding contribution volunteers make to athletics and running at every level.

Why nominate?

Volunteers are the heart of athletics and running. Saying “thank you” can be incredibly powerful. Over the years, we’ve seen just how much it means to volunteers and their families when their commitment is acknowledged. These awards offer a meaningful way to show appreciation for the people who make a real difference in clubs, communities, schools, and events across the country.

Our sport simply wouldn’t thrive without them. That’s why we encourage you to work alongside your club colleagues to submit a nomination and celebrate worthy volunteers - whether that’s a friend, family member, student, colleague, clubmate, or someone who always goes the extra mile.

Highlight their hard work. Celebrate their dedication. Help us recognise the volunteers who make athletics and running possible.

The closing date for nominations is Friday 5 June 2026.

Volunteer Award categories 2026

Club of the Year

The Club of the Year award is here to celebrate outstanding affiliated clubs, with a focus on clubs that have strived to improve over the last 12 months. For example, showcasing strong club governance, demonstrating what they are doing to improve member experience and ensuring the club is inclusive in its approach.

The nominations can also explore the role clubs are playing around athlete development, creating a first-class training environment, and how the club are going above and beyond to provide a great environment for their members. You may also want to consider highlighting good practices around sustainability. Through this category we want to celebrate what clubs are most proud of over the last year.

Unsung Hero of the Year

We welcome nominations from all areas of volunteers at a Club, from Chair to Run Leader, to session helper (and everything in between!). We also want to celebrate the outstanding contribution of licensed coaches and officials across the club network. The Unsung Hero must have been involved with a Club for at least 12 months.

The Unsung Hero category celebrates volunteers who make exceptional contributions, demonstrating dedication, passion and selflessness. An Unsung Hero makes a significant personal sacrifice to support their club, group, or community without seeking recognition or personal reward.

This award celebrates those who go above and beyond their role to support others. They keep things running smoothly, often without others realising the scale of their contribution.

Unsung Project of the Year

This award recognises a project and /or initiative that delivers meaningful impact within the club or wider community.

Through this category we want to celebrate projects that enhance the club environment, facilities, opportunities, or experience.

The project benefits the wider community through activities such as:

  • Foodbank or charitable based initiatives
  • Community project work
  • Fundraising for facility refurbishment / track maintenance
  • Informal competition (e.g. funetics multi challenge / QuadKids / Sportshall)
  • Local engagement or outreach programmes
  • Volunteer-driven development or improvement projects

This award celebrates the positive impact that people can have on their clubs, making their area a better place and/or strengthening communities.

Services to Athletics and Running

This is our lifetime achievement category and an opportunity to recognise the long-standing volunteers who play a vital role in making our sport what it is today.

This award celebrates volunteers who have been involved for a minimum of 15 years and have had a huge impact on running, athletics, clubs, and the local community. It is an opportunity to thank some truly remarkable volunteers who have committed a large part of their lives to athletics and running.
