Ted Butcher: 1934-2021

England Athletics and the Amateur Athletic Association are sorry to hear of the death of former Director Ted Butcher who passed away recently after a lifetime of service to athletics.

Ted represented road running on the AAA Board between 2008 and 2013 having been Secretary of the Road Running Committee for many years.

He began his athletics career as a distance runner with Colchester and Tendring AC in Essex, a club he remained loyal to throughout his life, but work commitments meant a move to Peterborough, a move that Lincolnshire Athletics Association is very grateful for as he served as their County Cross Secretary for many years and supported their events unreservedly.

As well as distinguished service on AAA and Regional Committees, Ted was a very experienced official in endurance, track and field, road running and cross country competitions. He had a strong sense of justice, applying the rules strictly and fairly and was meticulous in his preparation for whatever official role he was assigned. Many new and novice officials have expressed gratitude for his help, guidance, and encouragement. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.

His death is a great loss to the sport.
