Podcast #32: End of year review including the British Milers' Club's 'best year ever'

This end of season review episode includes an exclusive interview with the British Milers' Club (BMC) - which describes 2021 as its 'best year ever'. Also on this month's England Athletics Podcast, our top team discuss the positives to take from the past ten months, as well as the challenges currently being tackled.

Find out more about the BMC from Chair and CEO Tim Brennan. He explains to Alex Seftel why having 'graded races' is key to encouraging athletes to compete at its middle distance events and often results in great performances.

"In a BMC meeting, you could be that under-17 lining up alongside an Olympic runner - I'm very proud that that's something the BMC is doing." -

Meanwhile, England Athletics CEO Chris Jones, Head of Club Support and Participation Emma Davenport and Head of Coaching and Athlete Development Martin Rush all give their verdicts on a period that started with lockdown in January and culminated in the Olympic Games alongside the return of national championships. All the while, excitement is turning up a notch for next summer's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

CEO Chris Jones said: "The performance in Tokyo in the Paralympics reinforced how strong and in good health our para sport is. None of those achievements would be possible without the hard work of volunteers to make our sport as inclusive and as open as it can be at local level."

Head of Coaching and Athlete Development Martin Rush added: "We know we've got big challenges - making sure that we're getting young athletes back into the sport - but we're in a good, solid position. We know where we can go forward. We've got things like the Commonwealth Games next summer - an amazing opportunity for athletics. I'm working with Kelly Sotherton, our Team Leader, and the rest of my staff to make sure that there is a direct link between the clubs, volunteers, all of the great work and something as important as Birmingham 2022."

"Wherever you are an athlete, there's a coach, a resource, or a facility to help you on your journey." -
