Designed as a complete pathway, from early skill development through to the Sportshall Awards and exciting team competitions, the programme helps young people build friendships, develop healthy habits and create lasting memories through the sport.

Mission

To partner with schools and communities to deliver inclusive, trusted athletics programmes that enable more children to belong, engage and grow, reaching every school, inspiring every child and celebrating every effort.

Objectives

  • To increase participation in athletics among children, helping them lead healthier and more active lives.
  • For Sportshall to provide a clear pathway from school-based activities into the wider club structure, supporting long-term engagement in athletics.
  • To create inclusive opportunities for every child to belong, grow and thrive within athletics.

Through this partnership, Sportshall can help to achieve these objectives and ultimately reach the goal of every child doing the programme, helping them lead in the future happier and healthier lives, aligning with England Athletics' guiding principles.

The Sportshall pathway

The Sportshall pathway blends skills, awards and competitions that engage children of all abilities.

Skills

Children start with Infant Agility (ages 4–7), a set of 12 fun activities that build strong fundamental movement skills. They then move into the Sportshall Decathlon pathway for primary and secondary schools. Using the Triathlon, Pentathlon or Decathlon, pupils follow a safe, structured and engaging framework that introduces core Sportshall activities and makes teaching athletics simple.

Awards

The Sportshall Award encourages every child to improve their personal bests across 10 fun skill-building activities. Students can complete the Sportshall Pentathlon or Decathlon to achieve Sportshall awards, celebrating progress at every step.

Designed to:

  • Introduce all pupils to the fun and energy of Sportshall
  • Build key athletic skills in a structured, engaging way
  • Support preparation for Sportshall competitions
  • Fit easily into any PE lesson

funetics multi-challenge

England Athletics is launching an exciting new competition format, funetics multi-challenge, to encourage more regular, age-appropriate opportunities for primary school aged children to compete in athletics. With pilot competitions being planned and delivered by a number of clubs and associations across the country, clubs and athletics associations can still be part of the pilot phase.

Building on the success of Sportshall Athletics indoors, we want more primary aged children to experience an inclusive and accessible start to their competitive journeys, with a focus on enjoyment, being part of a team and individual improvement.
