Seniors
To be held in conjunction with the British Athletics Up and Down World Championships selection race, Sedbergh on 7 May 2023.
U20
To be held in conjunction with the British Athletics U20 Up and Down World Championships selection race, Todd Crag, Ambleside on 6 May 2023.
Representative opportunities
The committee will select the best available teams to represent England, although where shown some teams will be selected as development teams to give them experience of international competition.
- All events in 2023 are subject to funding and England Athletics may amend the policies at any point.
- Selectors view trials as the primary means of selecting the teams. Where there is no trial or an athlete is unable to compete in the trial race, it is the athlete’s responsibility to provide the Chair of Selectors,Duncan Richards (Duncan@intouchltd.co.uk) with details of all performances they wish to be considered at the selection meeting. This information must be provided in advance of the trial race where there is one or before the advertised selection date.
- Athletes will usually be informed of their selection within a week of the trial and/or deadline for expressions of interest.
- Selection of all athletes is subject to the agreement of the athlete’straining and racing programme between the date of selection and the representative race by the England Athletics reserves the right to de-select any athlete who is deemed unfit or injured in the lead up to the event.
- Athletes wishing to be selected for races abroadmust have a valid UK passport for the country they are travelling to and be eligible to represent England in international competitions. The selection committee reserves the right to de-select any athlete who does not provide all the information requested (including passport details) within a week of selection.
- For all races,if the selectors believe that a minimum performance standard for selection has not been achieved, they reserve the right not to select a full team. To clarify – England Athletics do not intend to send teams to international events composed of athletes who have not demonstrated the level of performance required.
Please note, that at the time of publication some dates and venues have not been confirmed. As soon as any official decision is confirmed it will be published immediately on the England Athletics and Fell Running Association websites.
Event: Senior Home International (Snowdon International Race, Llanberis, Wales)
- Date: 15 July 2023
- Selection Date: 13 May 2023
- Trial: 13 May 2023, Fairfield Horseshoe
- Team composition: Up to four senior men, two U23 men, four senior women and two U23 women may be selected. NB. There will only be an A team.
- U23 athletes are defined as born in 2001 – 2003 inclusive. The quota of four senior athletes may include U23 athletes if more than two are selected.
- Selection details: The first two senior men, two senior women, one U23 man and one U23 woman will gain selection from the Trial Race (subject to performances being of an appropriate standard) with the remaining places to be decided by the selectors.
Event: International U18 Mountain Running Cup, Annecy, France
- Date: 26 – 27 May 2023
- Selection Date: 6 May 2023
- Trial: 6 May 2023, Todd Crag FRA Junior Championships Race.
- Team composition: Up to four junior men and four junior women (born within the years 2006/2007 younger athletes are not eligible) may be selected.
- Selection details: The first three junior men and three junior women will gain selection from the trial race with the remaining place to be decided by the selectors.
Event: Junior Home International, Peebles, Scotland.
- Date: 10 September 2023
- Selection Date: 16 July 2023
- Trial: 16 July 2023 – Big Stone fell race, Goyt valley (in conjunction with FRA Junior Championships race)
- Team composition: Four U20 men and four U20 women (age at 31 December 2023 – this includes athletes born in 2004, 2005 and 2006), four U17 boys and four U17 girls (age at 31 December 2023 – this includes athletes born in 2007 and 2008) may be selected.
- Selection details:
- U20: The first two athletes from the trial race will be selected for the England team, remaining places to be decided by the selectors.
- U17: The first two athletes from the trial race will be selected for the England team, remaining places to be decided by the selectors.
Event: U23 Development Race
Montemuro Vertical Run, Castro Daire, Portugal
- Date: 2 July 2023
- Trial: 5 May 2023, British Athletics World Mountain and Trail Running Championships uphill only selection race, Skiddaw.
- Selection Date: 5 May 2023
- Team composition: Up to six athletes in total (mix men/women) may be selected.
- Selection details: Athletes who have performed at a high standard in the British Athletics World Trial but have not been selected for the GB team are eligible for places. To be eligible an athlete must be at least 20 and at most 22 on the 31 December on the year of competition. (i.e., born 2001 – 2003)

Training Camps
These camps are aimed at establishing the building blocks of future high performance in endurance running by developing skills and knowledge amongst junior runners and coaches.
The Introduction to Mountain Running Camp is one day camp for juniors who have reached the age where International representation is a possibility, but is intended for any juniors showing potential who wish to improve.
The Performance in Mountain Running Camp is for more experienced junior athletes transitioning to senior racing, it includes some training sessions on local hills and is residential.
Both camps are intended to enjoyable, stimulating, and interesting, building relationships with peers and include talks delivered by experienced coaches, physiotherapists and sports scientists as well as inputs and insights from elite athletes.

- Top 10 in FRA Junior Championships
- Placed in FRA Junior Championship or BOFRA races
- County standard XC, Track or road

Camp: Performance in International Mountain Running
- Age Group: 17-19 years
- Date: 24-26 March 2023
- Venue: Hornby Lane, Settle
- Selection criteria:
- Athletes should be committed to mountain running in 2023 and be planning to run the British Athletics World and/or European Trials.
- GB mountain running vest
- Top 10 in Junior Home International
- Top 10 English Schools, National or Inter-Counties Cross Country
- Top 6 in Area Cross Country
- Performances of similar standard to the above – please ask!
